DJing

A DJ since 2003, I’ve been running my own club nights since 2008. My current night Crawdaddy! takes place on the third Friday of every month at the Fiddler’s Elbow, Camden.

We play 50s and 60s R&B, mod, northern soul, Tamla Motown, ska, Two Tone, rocksteady and more, all on original vinyl.

The seeds of my DJ career were sown in Somerset back in the giddy summer of ’79, as a young mod during the revival sparked by the film Quadrophenia, the Two Tone label and bands like The Jam, The Chords and the Kent northern soul compilations.

There was one failed attempt to launch a mod and soul club but the local goths, punks and rockers threatened to trash the place if we didn’t stop. The club owners politely asked us to pack our record boxes and leave.

Things changed in 2003 when I was asked to DJ at a friend’s new soul night, Walls of Heartache in East London. Since then I’ve been DJing regularly and have become addicted to flicking tirelessly through racks of dusty 7”s in record shops, charity shops and at record fairs in search of the finest vintage soul, ska and mod tunes.
